Volkswagen hints at an electric sports car, likely a brother of the Porsche Taycan Turbo
While its sub-brands like Porsche and Audi have joined the alliance of sports car brands, Volkswagen itself is not in that segment. However, it seems that the German automaker is aiming to break into this segment with both electric powertrains. The automaker has hinted that it is weighing the idea of building an all-electric sports car that will come with a powertrain that makes 680 horsepower. The electric sports car could become a standout model for the car brand if it goes into production.
The automaker has suggested that the company’s MEB architecture, which was developed specifically for electric cars, could underpin this ambitious sports car. It may come with a power output similar to porsche taycan Booster unit. The interesting way, volkswagen previously developed the W12 Nardo and XL Sport powered by Ducati’s V2 engine, but none reached production level. However, it looks like the automaker hasn’t given up on sports cars yet.

The automaker also hasn’t started developing pulse inverters and thermal management systems, besides its own battery cells and electric motors. This opens up the possibility of developing a modular toolkit that can be introduced for both the brand’s electric and conventional sports cars.
The car brand adds that it has developed a modified version of the MEB platform, dubbed the MEB Evo. This upgraded modular EV architecture is said to be able to reduce electric vehicle development costs by up to 20%. Meanwhile, the group’s first dedicated electric sports car will be on the market in 2025 when Porsche launches a replacement for the 718 Boxster/Cayman. Volkswagen’s electric sports car could follow suit. However, the car giant has not revealed any specific timeframe on when to bring the electric sports car to market.
