The head of Wednesday’s opening session of Book 5 in last year’s Keeneland September Sale appearing in the final days was Hip 3181, son of Violence, was summoned $220,000 by James Zahler. The bay was picked up by Bolter Bloodstock for $20,000 and deposited by Peter O’Callaghan’s Woods Edge Ranch.

A pony of Mule’s Army brought in the second-highest bid of $200,000 from Manfred and Penny Conrad, owners of champion female sprinter Shamrock Rose (First Prince). Hip 3152 deposited by Denali stud on behalf of Ontario breeder Yvonne Schwabe.

Conrad Bandoroff of Denali said: ‘This foal is a very good looking horse and is very active. “He came on the pitch and performed very well. He is owned by a friend and loyal client in Yvonne Schwabe and we are delighted for her to have such an outcome. It’s always great to have a gig and it’s even better when you can do it for a really nice person.”

Total trading sessions remained on par with last year with the top 329 bringing in $12,969,000 on Wednesday with an average of $39,419 and a median of $30,000. The average is on par with the same session last year and is less than 1% above the 2021 average of $39,783. In the last season’s Book 5 opening, last year’s 325 books grossed $12,929,500. The RNA share is also fairly equal at 9.2% last year and 9.8% this period.

Cumulative numbers have grown with 2180 aged individuals sold to date for $389,605,000 compared to last year when 2125 pups brought in $339,691,500. The median is up 11.8% from $159,855 to $178,718, and the median is up 11.1% from $90,000 to $100,000. The percentage of RNA decreased slightly from 21.2% to 20.18%.

“I think trading today is still competitive,” says Bandoroff. “If you come here with realistic expectations and are willing to put a reasonable reserve and put your horse in the market, there will be a lot of revenue. We had a very good clearance rate today. It’s great to see the back round full and people have an appetite to buy horses.”

Gainesway was Wednesday’s top-selling film overall with 23 entries bringing in $1.166 million. Grassroots Sales & Training led all buyers, buying 10 heads for $375,000. Meanwhile, Kantharos leads all males in session with his 11 females summoning $472,500.
