Video of a doctor beating a patient’s pacemaker goes viral; Netizens have too many questions

A cardiologist has received huge acclaim on social media for a video of him reviving a collapsed patient. While some praised the doctor for this heroic act and timely use of medical science, others raised questions.

The incident happened at a clinic in Kolhapur in Maharashtra where CCTV footage captured the miraculous efforts of Dr. Arjun Adnaik, a famous cardiologist. The video went viral after MP Rajya Sabha and BJP Spokesperson Dhananjay Mahadik shared it on Twitter. “This video shows an example of a real-life hero living among us. Dr. Arjun Adnaik, one of the best cardiologists, from Kolhapur saved a patient’s life. I applaud the such venerable and virtuous hero,” the MP tweeted.

Trouble
As recorded by CCTV, the incident happened around 2pm on September 3 at OPD 1 of a hospital. Two people, one wearing a yellow T-shirt and the other wearing a blue T-shirt, were seen sitting in front of Dr. Adnaik. Few other people were also seen in the room during that time.

In an instant, one of the two men suddenly collapsed while sitting on a chair. Seconds before collapsing, he rubbed his knees and even tried to hit the table lightly.

Seeing the person collapsed, the doctor immediately ran over and started beating his chest. In the 37-second video, the doctor can be seen beating the patient’s chest for more than 12 seconds. After recovering, the patient was seen sitting calmly in a chair and he even responded to the doctor.

Everyone praised the caring doctor’s presence.

However, many others said the whole thing looked as if it was staged.

“…but these chest blows don’t do anything”

Dr. Shariq Shamim, an interventional cardiologist tweeted: “I’m sorry but chest beats like this don’t do anything. It’s not CPR. And it has nothing to do with a heart attack. who wakes up”.

Another Twitter user, Dr. Milind Bhise, wrote, “It’s like cardiac arrest, maybe just fainting. It’s not pounding or CPR, and it’s not a treatment for anyone. whatever. Doctors are human, not gods or businessmen, so don’t praise too much or call bandits. Let us help as much as we can.”

Another user wrote, “Never seen or heard of such CPR because of a Heart Attack.. Doctor went back to his seat, others just stood.. looked awkward”

Speaking to TOI, Dr. Adnaik said he has done this several times. He also said that this was the first time it was recorded in the CCTV installed in his OPD. He said people should use heart massage to revive a patient’s heart.

A pacemaker is a device that controls irregular heartbeats. It has flexible wires placed in the chambers of the heart. These wires provide electrical impulses and regulate heart rate. It is necessary for people with slow heart rate. It is also recommended for people whose heart rate stops, causing episodes of fainting. It is also used to correct heart palpitations.

What is CPR?

Victims of sudden cardiac arrest require CPR to prevent further damage. CPR increases a patient’s chance of survival. CPR or cardiopulmonary resuscitation is performed when the person is unconscious and not breathing. During this procedure, mouth and mouth breathing and chest compressions are performed to pump blood to the brain. It works on the principle of 30 chest compressions and mouth breathing.

CPR steps everyone needs to know

  • Help the patient lie on their back
  • Kneel beside the patient and place the heel of the hand on the center of the chest.
  • Keep your arms straight
  • Lock your fingers and keep them locked together
  • Keep your fingers raised and make sure they don’t touch the patient’s skeleton
  • Press down on the chest; release pressure
  • Repeat to produce 30 compressions at a rate of 100 compressions per minute
  • Lift the patient’s chin; close the nostrils
  • Breathe into the patient’s mouth; stop when you see breasts rise
  • After the chest collapses, repeat the breath and press
  • Each cycle should do 30 chest compressions, followed by two breaths
