Verstappen wins 2022 French F1 Grand Prix after Leclerc is eliminated

Sunday’s 2022 Formula One Grand Prix will be a race that Charles Leclerc will want to forget.

The Ferrari driver dominated the weekend and looked set to claim his fourth win of the season, but he retired for the third time instead. He failed to subdue a case of overtaking the passer in Turn 11 on lap 18, sending him into the hurdles, finishing his race and taking out the safety car.

This gave the lead to Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen, who went on to take home the win. Mercedes-Benz AMG’s Lewis Hamilton finished second, 10,587 seconds behind Verstappen, while fellow Mercedes driver George Russell finished third, 16,495 seconds behind the winner.

When the lights turned green at the blazing hot Circuit Paul Ricard, Leclerc easily separated from Verstappen, who started in second on the grid. Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez started in third but was soon overtaken by Hamilton, but still trailing Russell in fifth.

Leclerc managed to hold on to Verstappen despite a few attempts to pass by the Red Bull driver. Likewise, Hamilton was able to hold back Perez. Meanwhile, Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz, who started behind the grid due to an engine penalty, is slowly making the order.

Sainz finished third in the second half of the race, ahead of Russell and Perez, but unfortunately an earlier unsafe release from the hole cost him a five-second penalty. So he had to go down the pit again to receive the punishment. He will eventually finish fifth, taking home a bonus point for the fastest lap on the road. Standing in front of him was Perez, who finished fourth.

There were several other dramas, though Alfa Romeo’s Zhou Guanyu stopped at the track area on Turn 5 on lap 49, causing the virtual safety car to be deployed.

Following the weekend’s action, Verstappen’s lead in the 2022 Drivers’ Championship has been extended even further, with the Red Bull driver currently on 233 points. Leclerc is second with 170 points and Perez is third with 163 points. In the Constructors’ Championship, Red Bull led with 396 points, compared with Ferrari’s 314 and Mercedes’ 270. The battle continues this weekend with round 13, the Hungarian Grand Prix.
