If you’re contemplating switching to a new phone carrier, free trials can help you get a feel for it before you put down your wallet and sign any paperwork. T-Mobile was one of the first to offer this test drive, but others like Verizon are now doing the same.

Verizon announced today that it will offer a 30-day free trial of 5G and 4G LTE to new customers, with the condition that you use an unlocked smartphone that supports eSIM.

By subscribing to it Free Trial Program, non-Verizon customers can sign up for an unlimited, monthly data plan (up to 100GB), can call, text, and browse the web using their existing device and phone number, and access your mobile network’s 5G speed (if your phone and local area support it). There are no additional costs, fees, credit card requirements and contractual agreements associated with the trial program, so it is a “risk-free” program like the trial programs.

How to Sign Up for Verizon’s Free Trial Program

You need to download the My Verizon app first to check your phone’s compatibility. You can find it in the app store or by scanning the QR code on Verizon FAQ page.

Open the app and tap the “Start Free Trial” button at the top. As a reminder, the test drive is only available to non-Verizon customers and you can join it once a year.

After the app checks your phone’s eligibility and approves it, tap “Get Started” and enter your personal contact information. Finally, you’ll need to give the app a few minutes for Verizon to distribute its service to you, along with a separate eSIM phone number to use during the trial period.

Once the app setup is complete and you’re ready to use the eSIM network, go into your phone’s SIM card settings — usually found under the Connections tab — and turn it on. The eSIM profile will be labeled as “VZW”.

Note that while the service is provided via eSIM, you can still use your existing phone number and cellular plan associated with your physical SIM card. This makes it easy to gauge data speed and performance differences, if any.
