Vergil Ortiz Jr. ready to challenge Spence or Crawford after the match with Michael McKinson

Via Dan Ambrose: Vergil Ortiz Jr. said he wants his title ahead of welterweight champions Terence Crawford or Errol Spence Jr after he battled WBO 5th-placed contender Michael McKinson on August 6 at the Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas. The battle will be shown live on DAZN

Ortiz (18-0, 18 KOs) is ranked #1 with WBA, WBC & WBO at 147 and he feels ready to challenge for a world title now. His promoters at Golden Boy Promotions aren’t keeping the 24-year-old Ortiz back, and that’s a good thing because the possibility of one day his big paycheck disappears when Crawford & Spence rises to 154.

Winning one of the soon-to-be-vacated heavyweight titles won’t bring Ortiz the same amount of money as he would against Spence or Crawford.

There’s nothing for those two champions to fight Ortiz because he doesn’t have a huge fan base and doesn’t offer much to either of them.

Instead of fighting one of the popular champions for the title, Ortiz will have a hard time facing either Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis or David Avaneysan.

The amount of money Ortiz could make fighting either of those guys for the vacant belt, and the risk would be high for him if he fought Boots Ennis.

You could argue that most boxing fans would choose Boots over Ortiz, and it should come as no surprise that the Ortiz promoters at the Golden Boy will do all they can to ensure that. he didn’t have to face him because one of the belts was vacant.

“Michael McKinson is ranked with the WBO, he’s undefeated and would look good on my resume if I beat him,” Vergil Ortiz Jr.on said Friday during a virtual roundtable to talk about the meeting. his August 9 battle against Michael McKinson.

“I want to beat anyone. Honestly, it doesn’t matter to me,” Vergil Jr said when asked which 147-year-old champion he wants to fight.

“Overall, now that I’m 100%, we’re ready to go and do what we do best. I really want to get back in the ring right now. By the time I fight in August, it will be almost a whole year

“I would love to fight twice this year and be even busier next year. I was very disappointed that I didn’t get to be in the game, especially when I found out that I couldn’t carry on literally the week of the match,” Ortiz said of his withdrawal from the day’s match. March 19 with McKinson.

“I don’t want to waste a whole training camp and months before that. He was fighting someone whose style was completely different from mine, so you can’t really base that on. But I know how he fights, and it was a recent fight. We have some more tapes to talk about him,” Ortiz Jr said of McKinson.
