Vergil Ortiz Jr beat Michael McKinson, not ready for Boots Ennis

Via Brian Webber: Vergil Ortiz Jr (19-0, 19 KOs) clinched himself a title with a ninth-minute stoppage-time win over Michael McKinson (22-1, 2 KOs) in a 147 lb WBA title elimination match on Saturday night, but he’s not ready for the likes of Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis.

With that performance from Ortiz, his supporters at Golden Boy would do well to spice him up before he goes behind one of the belts in the welterweight division.

Ortiz, 24, did what he had to do in tracking down and stopping British boxer McKinson on Saturday night at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.

The fight wasn’t an easy one for Ortiz, as he swung and missed McKinson repeatedly until finally catching him with a left in the body to knock him out in the eighth round.

That could be a really tough situation for Ortiz if McKinson has any punching power.

Sergio Mora told All Access Elite Boxing about Vergil Ortiz Jr.’s win over Michael McKinson on Saturday night: “I don’t think he’s destroyed him, but he’s interested in the business and finding a way. to break him.

“McKinson is scary. We know it will be difficult. Both are undefeated; Neither of them wanted to lose, but Vergil Ortiz forced him into submission. He’s found a way to do it, and that’s the body.

“He was a slippery southern tennis player, and he couldn’t catch him with upstairs hits. He found a house down there. Once he got his liver touched, it took a long time to recover and obviously, he didn’t have that on his side,” Mora said of McKinson.

“You have to give all credit to McKinson. He fights the victors, and fights them in their homeland and he defeats them. He wasn’t able to do it tonight, but he showed a brave effort.

“He’s not going to win rounds because you can’t compete with the power and pressure of Vergil Ortiz. He said he was going to do everything he could to win, and I think we saw that. It’s just that he’s been compared in terms of power.

“The money will be there. I said no to Bud Crawford,” Mora talked about wanting Vergil Jr not to fight Terence Crawford right now. “Ortiz just turned 24. There’s still plenty of time to mature.”
