Vegan who failed to deal with mouse infestation and fed them instead is fined by court | UK News

A vegan who couldn’t handle rat infestation in his home because of his moral beliefs has been fined by the court.

Margaret Manzoni, 73 years old, in total St Osyth in Essex“regards the rats as her pets” and “says they won’t come to her neighbor’s house because she took care of them”.

Tendring County Council prosecuted the pensioner a second time after she failed to comply with an earlier order issued in April.

The panel said during a hearing at Colchester Magistrates Court this month, Manzoni was told that while the court “respected her beliefs as an ethical vegetarian, others considered her to be an ethical vegetarian.” Rats are vermin.”

The court said “the impact of the infection on neighbors meant that inaction was inappropriate”, according to authorities.

Manzoni pleaded guilty at a hearing on October 6 to failing to comply with a notice under the Environmental Protection Act and a notice under the Pest Damage Prevention Act.

She was fined £1,500, with the court imposing a council fee of £2,395 and imposing a victim surcharge of £150.

The council said the court heard that the council’s environmental health team was called in by neighboring residents, who were overrun by rats, causing property damage, due to conditions in the middle home. Manzoni’s terrace, the council said.

Council staff made a number of visits and offered to help, before issuing a statement “asking Manzoni to stop feeding the birds, clean up overgrown gardens and call for pest control”. government said.

A spokesperson for Tendring County Council said: “While some construction work was carried out by the council, food and shelter continued to be provided by Manzoni for the rats – resulting in an overwhelming odor and forcing the neighbors to move out.”

“Tendring County Council recommended alternative accommodation for Manzoni but she considers the rats her pet, says they won’t come to her neighbor’s house because she takes care of them and refuses to act because argues that it goes against her ‘moral beliefs'”.

“This led to the first prosecution, as although the environmental health team continued to visit regularly, nothing changed; leaving the board with no choice but to prosecute again.”
