Not so long ago, Egis Klimas was preparing to negotiate an undisputed fight between his boxer, Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury. Now, the manager has not restrained his harsh assessment of ‘The Gypsy King’.
The heavyweight division is close to just one more champion, but, as is typical in boxing, things have changed.
The timeline is relatively clear. Usyk called Fury after he beat Anthony Joshua for the second time. Fury, who holds the WBC belt, reacts positively, suggesting December. The Ukrainian wants a longer rest and repair, dealing with early next year. Fury called ‘AJ’ instead, who acceptedand here we are.
While the Fury vs Joshua fight in the UK is something fans have been asking for for years now, an undisputed showdown between Fury and Usyk is also on their list. One person close to all is Usyk’s manager, Egis Klimas.
Talk to Joseph Santoliquito of Ring MagazineKlimas gives his opinion on Fury’s plan.
“Usyk is the heavyweight world champion and look how many statements Fury has made in the last few months, he’s retired, he’s not retired, he’s fighting Usyk, he’s not. [fighting] Usyk, and now that he’s fighting Joshua, you really don’t know what Fury will do next.
If you look at his past with all that has happened, Fury has always caused a problem when it comes to being the undisputed world champion. He is unpredictable.”
As for what Fury vs Joshua, if it’s done, means with Usyk, he says his men want to take on the next ‘The Gypsy King’ – and a fight between Joshua has can prevent fans from seeing an undisputed heavyweight champion.
“What happens when Joshua hits his ass? What will happen next? They will go to a rematch, which will push back their chances of having the undisputed world champion. I think Fury is most likely afraid of Usyk. Why is he running away from Usyk? Why? Because Fury sees danger in Usyk.”
“Usyk wants to fight Fury later this year. You know, we’re not running after him. We have three belts. He has a belt. Who cares? It was a situation that Fury created. Not Usik. Usyk will fight Tyson Fury in his backyard. Usyk will fight anyone in their backyard. “
In the end, his champion instead of facing winners Deontay Wilder and Robert Helenius, Klimas hit back directly.
“Usyk wants to fight Wilder, but whoever wins that fight will be next for Usyk. Usyk is not like Fury. He’s looking for winners, not losers.”
