US motorists consider Tesla, GM’s partially automated cars to be self-driving, says study

A new study shows that drivers using advanced driver assistance systems like Tesla Autopilot or General Motors Super Cruise often consider their cars fully autonomous despite warnings.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), an industry-funded group that encourages automakers to create safer vehicles, said Tuesday a survey found that Frequent users of Super Cruise, Nissan/Infiniti ProPILOT Assist, and Tesla Autopilot “reported that they were more likely to perform non-driving activities such as eating or texting while using the partially automated system.” theirs compared to when driving without assistance.”

The IIHS study of 600 active users found that 53% of Super Cruise drivers, 42% of autonomous drivers, and 12% of ProPILOT Assist owners “say they feel comfortable treating their vehicle as an autonomous vehicle.” fully driven.”

About 40% of users of Autopilot and Super Cruise – two systems with inattention locking – reported that the systems turned off at some point while they were driving and would not reactivate.

“The big message here is that early adopters of these systems are still poorly understood about the limits of the technology,” said IIHS President David Harkey.

The study comes as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is scrutinizing Autopilot crashes.

Since 2016, NHTSA has opened 37 special investigations involving 18 deaths in accidents involving Tesla media and where the system likes Autopilot has been suspected of use.

Tesla did not respond to a request for comment. Tesla says Autopilot is not for self-driving vehicles and is designed for use by an attentive driver who is ready to take over.

GM, which said in August that owners can use Super Cruise on 400,000 miles (643,740 km) of roads in North America and plans to offer Super Cruise on 22 models by the end of 2023, did not immediately comment. ie.

The IIHS says the ads for Super Cruise focus on hands-free capabilities while Autopilot conjures up the name used in passenger aircraft and “implies Tesla’s system is more capable than it actually is.” In contrast, the IIHS notes that ProPILOT Assist “suggests that it is an assistive feature, rather than a replacement for the driver.”

NHTSA and the automakers say there are no systems for self-driving cars.

Nissan says its name “it makes clear that ProPILOT Assist is a driver assistance system and it requires practice. The driver maintains control of the vehicle at all times.”
