An American mountaineer has been found dead after she fell from the eighth highest peak in Nepal.
Helicopter Shangri-La Nepal Trek confirmed the confirmation of Hilaree Nelson’s helicopter on the southern face of Mount Manaslu on Wednesday morning.
The 49-year-old skied down the 26,775ft (8,163m) summit with her partner Jim Morrison on Monday when she falls.
Rescuers tried to find her but couldn’t find her by searches on Monday and Tuesday.
According to the climbing company, Ms. Nelson’s body has been returned to the basecamp and is being transported to a hospital in Kathmandu where an autopsy can be carried out.
Ms. Nelson is an extreme skier who crossed with her partner the summit of Mount Lhotse, the world’s fourth highest peak, in 2018.
Earlier, on Monday, a lower-altitude avalanche on Mount Manaslu killed a Nepali guide and injured several other climbers.
All climbers arrested in the incident have been accounted for, with some of the injured flown to Kathmandu to receive treatment for their injuries.
After landing from a helicopter, one of the avalanche survivors, Phurte Sherpa, said: “I’m not sure about the whereabouts of the missing climber but her husband was with us in the search. search today. We made two rescue attempts by helicopter, but we couldn’t find her.”
Mountain ‘tested her resilience in new ways’
In her last Instagram post last week, Ms Nelson described struggling and not feeling “as sure in Manaslu as I’ve had on previous adventures into the thin Himalayan atmosphere”. high”.
“The past weeks have tested my resilience in new ways,” she wrote.
“The incessant monsoons with relentless rain and humidity have made me hopelessly homesick. I am challenged to find peace and inspiration in the mountain as it is constantly shrouded in fog.”
Hundreds of climbers and their local guides are in Manaslu trying to reach the summit during Nepal’s autumn climbing season.
The government has issued permits to 504 climbers to attempt the high peaks during the fall. Most of them are on Mount Manaslu.
