WASHINGTON: The United States on Friday asked its citizens to exercise “increased caution” when traveling to India due to “crime and terrorism”, and advised them not to visit Jammu union territory. and Kashmir.
In a new travel advisory issued on Friday, the US State Department reduced the India Travel Advisory Level to 2 on a scale of one to 4 with the latter being the highest.
The State Department in a separate consultation, a day earlier, had elevated Pakistan to Level 3 and asked the country’s citizens to reconsider their travel, especially to provinces hit by terrorism and violence. sectarian force.
The State Department said: “There is a need to increase vigilance in India due to crime and terrorism.
“Do not go to: Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir (except for the eastern region of Ladakh and its capital Leh) due to terrorism and civil unrest, and within 10 km of the India-Pakistan border due to possibility of armed conflict,” it said.
According to the travel advisor, “Indian authorities report that rape is one of the fastest growing crimes in India. Violent crime, such as sexual assault, has occurred in the tourist destinations and in other locations.”
The advisory says “terrorists can strike with or without warning, targeting tourist sites, transport hubs, markets/shopping malls and government facilities”.
“The US government has limited ability to provide emergency services to US citizens in rural areas from eastern Maharashtra and northern Telangana to west Bengal because US government employees must have special permits. to go to these areas,” said the travel advisor.
