US Army buys a Hummer EV at the start of electric vehicle testing

The Our Army selected Hummer EV as its test for electric vehicles. It’s only a matter of time before the US Armed Forces begin deploying electric vehicles, but the Army’s interest in electric Hummers is still in the exploratory stage. A subsidiary of General Motors, GM Defensesaid it will deliver army with Hummer EV for analysis and demonstration.

According to GM Defense, the Army is looking for “a light-to-heavy battery-powered electric vehicle to aid in reducing dependence on fossil fuels.” I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out that there’s nothing “light” about the Hummer EV, but it doesn’t look like the Army’s engine family is made up of small, lightweight machines anyway. The EVs required by the Army will be used in both garrison (permanent bases and forts) and operational environments (forward operating bases and combat zones), which means any EV whichever branch chooses will sell.

Of course, that massive (read: lucrative) order awaits the results of the analysis, which is starting with a much more modest order, according to Automotive News:

GM spokeswoman Sonia Taylor wrote in an email to Automotive News that the military would buy a Hummer. She said GM Defense is perfectly aligned with GM’s goals fully electric by 2035 and well positioned to support the Army’s transition to electric vehicles.

You can bet that the General Motors subsidiary is keen to be the defense contractor of choice for the Army due to the many electric vehicles needed to convert from ICE-powered machines like AM Chung HMMWV or GM Defense ISV. Formerly the original Humvee; the latter is essentially the Chevy Colorado ZR2 used by infantry squads that need a faster troop carrier during the active phase.

The ISV even looks like GM’s desert-running SEMA concept, Monster Chevy!

GM Defense seems to think the Hummer EV Pickup is a compelling case for the Army. The “all-electric supercar,” as GMD calls it, has a range of 329 miles, and with full DC fast charging, the Hummer EV will reach almost a third of its maximum range in 12 minutes. Not long for 100 miles to recharge.

The Hummer EV Pickup produces 1,000 horsepower and 11,500 lb-ft of torque. With that much horsepower, the Hummer EV will sprint from 0-60mph in three seconds despite its size and weight. Hell, the Hummer EV even comes in an olive (pale) paint job.

General Motors has now invested $35 billion in the development of its electric vehicles, many of which will use Ultium platforms – including the Hummer EV. A US Army defense contract could go a long way in recovering some of those billions.
