US Air Force begins first phase testing of their new combat rescue helicopter

U.S. Air Force pilots with the 41st Generation Rescue Squadron performed a stage check on an HH-60W Jolly Green II helicopter at Moody Air Force Base, Georgia, according to a report. a recent service bulletin.

In a statement, the Air Force said this would be the first 720-hour period inspection performed on Whiskey since it entered service.

The “Whisky” model introduces more modern capabilities to the rescue community than its predecessor, while maintaining the characteristics that have made the Pave Hawk an effective system for nearly three decades.

The main mission of the HH-60W helicopter is to conduct day or night operations into hostile environments to recover isolated personnel from the war.

The platform will also be tasked with carrying out military operations outside of war, including civilian search and rescue, medical evacuation, disaster response, humanitarian assistance, security/attempt cooperation aviation consultant, NASA spaceflight support, and command and control rescue.

Jolly Green IIs use a 7.62 mm Gatling gun that fires 3,000 rounds per minute, a 0.5 caliber machine gun that can fire 1,100 rounds per minute, and a 0.5 caliber machine gun that can fire 800 rounds per minute.
