New Delhi:

Sarbananda Sonowal, Minister of Shipping and Waterways, inspected a large Indian-operated port in Iran.

Iran’s Chabahar port is a much needed project for India’s sea access to land areas. The facility has emerged as a trade transit hub for the region, as well as a more stable and economic route for landlocked nations to access India and global markets.

“Visited and inspected the port of Shahid Beheshti in Chabahar, Iran. The port is operated by India and is an important part of our bilateral relationship led by the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” Sonowal wrote. on Twitter.

“India is committed to the development of Chabahar Port,” he said. This is an important link of the North-South International Transport Corridor, opening Central Asia to the Southeast Asian and ASEAN markets,” he said.

“Since India took over the operation of Shahid Beheshti Port in Chabahar, it has handled more than 4.8 million tons of bulk cargo. The port has received shipments from Australia, B’desh, Brazil, Germany, Oman, Romania. , Russia, Thailand, UAE, Mr. Sonowal said Ukraine and Uzbekistan among other countries.

He also shared a video of the large port, showing wide access roads and cranes used to lift and unload shipping containers.

Mr. Sonowal today handed over six mobile port cranes to the port authority, which will improve operations at Shahid Beheshti Port and lead to further development of Chabahar Port.

In 2015, India agreed to help develop Iran’s Chabahar Port and a railway link that would allow India to trade with areas bordering the sea, unimpeded by Pakistan.

In February 2021, India handed over two 140-ton mobile port cranes to the Port of Chabahar government.

The Port of Chabahar is easily accessible from the West coast of India and is increasingly seen as a counterweight to the Pakistani Port of Gwadar located about 80 km from Chabahar.
