UNHCR: Record 100 million people forcibly displaced worldwide |

“One hundred million is an amazing number – alarming and alarming. It’s a record that should never have been set,“The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, said. “This must be a wake-up call to address and prevent destructive conflicts, end abuse, and address the underlying causes that force innocent people to leave their homes.”

Based on UNHCRThe number of people in forced displacement worldwide has increased to 90 million by the end of 2021, fueled by a new wave of violence or protracted conflict in countries including Ethiopia, Burkina Faso, Myanmar, Nigeria , Afghanistan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

In 2022, the war in Ukraine has displaced 8 million people in the country this year and displaced about 6 million people from the country.

Incredible record

The 100 million people in forced displacement worldwide represent 1% of the global population and equate to the 14th most populous country in the world.

The number includes refugees and asylum seekers as well as 53.2 million people have been displaced within their borders due to conflict.

Grandi added: “The international response to those fleeing the war in Ukraine has been very positive. “Compassion is still alive, and we need a similar mobilization for all crises around the world. But in the end, humanitarian aid is a palliative, not a cure. To reverse this trend, the only answer is peace and stability so that innocent people are not forced to gamble between urgent danger at home or precarious flight and life in exile.”

Last week, the International Organization for Migration announced a record 59.1 million people were displaced in their homeland last yearfour million more than in 2020.

Conflict and violence caused 14.4 million internally displaced people in 2021, an increase of nearly 50% from the previous year.

Meanwhile, weather-related events such as floods, storms and cyclones have resulted in an estimated 23.7 million internally displaced people in 2021, mainly in the Asia-Pacific region.
