UN Special Envoy for ‘good office mission’ in Burkina Faso – Global Affairs

The visit of Mahamat Saleh Annadif, Special Representative of the Secretary-General of West Africa and the Sahel, was announced on Friday, just hours after the regional bloc ECOWAS suspended the country’s membership.

UN chief António Guterres continues to monitor developments in Burkina FasoHis deputy spokesman, Farhan Haq, told journalists in New York.

Call for calm

“The Secretary-General continues to call for calm, the release of President Kaboré and other officials who have been detained, and the return to constitutional order in Burkina Faso,” he speak.

The Secretary-General noted ECOWAS’s decision and plans to deploy a delegation of regional chiefs of staff to Burkina Faso on Saturday, followed by a ministerial delegation next week.

Mr. Annadif will also join the ministerial mission with the Chairman of the ECOWAS Commission and the Foreign Minister of Ghana.

An ECOWAS summit is scheduled in Ghana’s capital Accra on February 3, to further discuss the situation in Burkina Faso.

On Friday, Mr. Annadif, participated in a special virtual summit on crisis, organized by the 15-member bloc.

He reiterated the UN’s condemnation of the unconstitutional changes of power and called for a prompt and unconditional return to the constitutional order, according to a tweet from his office.
