UN Secretary-General strongly condemns terrorist attack in Mali



Dozens of people were killed in the capital Bamako on Tuesday when Islamist militants attacked several sites, including a military police academy, international media reported.

Violence forced authorities to temporarily close the international airport.

The JNIM militant group, which is linked to Al-Qaeda, claimed responsibility.

Secretary General strongly condemned terrorist attack

He called on Mali’s transitional government to “take ensure that those responsible for this despicable attack are held accountable“ .

Mr. Guterres also sent his deepest condolences to the families of the victims as well as the Transitional Government and the people of Mali.

He wished a speedy recovery to those injured, including a member of the UN security unit.

More than 20 UN agencies are present in Mali, supporting the government in achieving its development goals.

The United Nations has maintained a decade-long peacekeeping mission in the country, known as MINUSMAceased operations in December 2023.
