UN plan calls for real progress towards ending internal displacement crisis |

The plan outlines 31 commitments of the United Nations system to better address, prevent and deal with internal displacement, and calls for action from countries, international financial institutions, private sector and other countries.

“Let me be clear: the obligation to end displacement lies first and foremost with governments. However, We all have a responsibility to act“Mr Guterres speak in a video message.

Nearly 60 million have been plucked

The Action program build in 2021 report by one high level control panel convened by the Secretary-General to identify specific recommendations to address the internal displacement crisis.

Last year, a record 59.1 million people International Organization for Migration (IOM) was reported in May, citing the latest Global Report on Internal Displacement (GRID).

Many devices have been uprooted for years, or even decades, and often times. Others have been forced to flee more recently.

“In just three months, war in Ukraine drive 13 million won people out of their homes and communities, almost two-thirds of which are still there in Ukraine,” said the head of the United Nations.

Fundamental change needed

The Agenda calls for the UN and its partners to make fundamental changes to the way they operate together if real progress is to be achieved. Or, as the head of the United Nations stated in the report “more than the same is not good enough. ”

The three main goals are to help internally displaced persons (IDPs) find a long term solutionarrive better prevent future displacement crisesand guarantee stronger protection and support for those currently facing displacement.

Some of the UN’s commitments include intensifying efforts to ensure greater inclusion of IDPs, as well as local community members, in decision-making on solutions.

The UN will also address displacement more systematically in line with its work on climate change, and will work with local and national governments to ensure displacement is part of their respective policies. disaster risk reduction policies and plans.

Alleviate suffering

The three goals are linked, as explained in the report. No solution is sustainable if another crisis emerges. No support will be enough if the underlying causes remain unresolved, and containment will not be successful if past crises are not resolved.

“The plight of internally displaced people is more than a humanitarian issue,” said the Secretary-General. “It is an integrated approach – combining development efforts, peace building, human rights, climate action and disaster risk reduction.”

He called on partners to support the UN in driving change, saying that “together, we can reduce human suffering and addressA better future for internally displaced people around the world. ”
