UN officials call for more ambitious and credible climate action plans
United Nations Climate Change Secretariat (UNFCCC)’S Summary report on Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) in 2024 shows current plans will result in emissions of 51.5 gigatons of carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent by 2030 – just 2.6% lower than 2019 levels.
As countries prepare for the United Nations climate change conference (COP29) in Baku next month, Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC called on governments to transform their commitments into “ real economic outcomes, real world”.
At COP28, hosted by the United Arab Emirates, delegations pledged to triple renewable energy, advancing the global goal of adaptation and transition away from all fossil fuels.
“COP29 must be a favorable COP, delivering concrete and ambitious results on climate finance taking into account the needs of developing countries, recognizing that such support is the core business of protecting every country and the global economy from severe climate impacts,” he said. Stiell emphasized.
Findings ‘remarkable but not surprising’
He cautioned that the report’s findings were “notable but not surprising”.
“Current national climate plans fall short of what is needed to stop global warming from crippling every economy and destroying billions of lives. and livelihoods in every country,” he added.
The report also shows that the current orbit does not meet scientific requirements.
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) – the United Nations scientific agency that assesses climate change and provides governments with scientific information to develop climate policy – notes that emissions need to be cut by 43% compared to year 2019.
Mr. Stiell emphasized that current levels of pollution would “guarantee economic and human ruin for every country, without exception.”
Looking ahead to updated commitments next year, he called for an “ABC check” for new plans:
“They must have Ambitious new emissions targets it’s a broad economy…they have to Divided into sectors and gases…and they should be Reliable, backed by substantive regulationslegislation and funding.”
He called for the 2024 NDC report “to be a turning point, ending the era of inadequacy and sparking a new era of acceleration, with much bolder new national climate plans from every country coming out.” launch next year.”
