The situation is also getting worse for Yemeni migrants, especially women – IOM head of the mission

Over the past seven years, the conflict in Yemen between the pro-government coalition led by Saudi Arabia and the Houthi rebels, has caused a severe humanitarian crisis, displaced more than 4.3 million people, destroys critical infrastructure and exacerbates the needs of migrants, displaced and receptive people. IOM said.

“The situation is also getting worse for Yemeni migrants, especially women, who are living in terrible conditions in Yemen without being able to control their lives.”speak Christa Rottensteiner, Head of Mission of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to the country.

Increased support

According to the UN’s humanitarian office, two out of every three Yemenis rely on humanitarian assistance.

And across the country, at least 7.4 million Yemenis need shelter and household items while 17.8 million need WASH assistance.

Meanwhile, amid rising food and fuel prices, demand continues to grow as the population struggles to survive the economic crisis exacerbated by the war in Ukraine, which supplies nearly 30 % of wheat supplies to Yemen before the war.

“Conflict remains the main driver of displacement, but the humanitarian needs of the community have been exacerbated by the weakening economy,” Ms. Rottensteiner said.

People in rural areas of Yemen are suffering from extreme poverty.

Despite the ongoing conflict and humanitarian crisis, Yemen remains a key point on the migration route from the Horn of Africa to Saudi Arabia, where many come in search of work opportunities.

Tens of thousands of people are estimated to be stranded and unable to return home or reach their destination, and many suffer serious human rights violations. So far this year, migration to Yemen is on the rise again, with an estimated 25,000 arriving in the first four months of 2022.

Contributions from the EU allow IOM to provide these thousands of migrants with health support, information on safe migration and support for personal protection.

For internally displaced persons, IOM is assisting with site management and service coordination across 61 relocation sites. Cash assistance is being provided to those newly displaced by combat and to families whose shelters need to be rehabilitated to prevent flood and fire hazards.

This funding also enables economical distribution of water to communities, provision of sanitation kits, renovation of water supply and sanitation infrastructure, and implementation of sanitation promotion campaigns to reduce risk. disease outbreak.

Ms. Rottensteiner added: “This new partnership with the EU allows IOM to continue its activities and reach thousands of migrants and migrants.
