For many years, the United Nations and its agencies in Geneva have relied on global news agencies and other media agencies based in Palace of Nations to bring the latest stories to the world every day.
But a special partnership with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), based in Geneva, ensures that public service broadcasters across Europe and around the world have access to radio stations. Live streaming and video news items come from the United Nations office in the city of Switzerland, a major source of international news content.

‘Challenge Fake News’
The partnership involves “challenging fake news, spearheading the transparent and balanced dissemination of truth, and restoring public trust in democratic institutions as the cornerstones of democracy.” public service media,” explains EBU General Manager Noel Curran.

Strengthen cooperation
An additional and recently created partnership involving both entities is the United Nations Communications Group for those working in the video sector. After the European group was formed – with EBU providing hosting – the group was joined in 2020 by the North American partner.
Michele Zaccheo, UNTV & Radio Director and Group Coordinator, said: “In a sense, COVID has made our partnership stronger, as so many have followed. ‘hybrid’ orientation and thus rely on direct audiovisual support”.
“When the pandemic began, we teamed up to not only combat COVID misinformation, but also to see how we could specifically work together and support each other.”
The EBU’s social media channel, which EBU created to provide social media content trusted enough to broadcast, is similar to Verified, the initiative by Melissa Fleming, United Nations Secretary-General for Global Communications, and UNTV took action to bring the two initiatives together to figure out how they could support each other.
Looking to the future, the two organizations are finding ways to combat hate speech and genocide denial, as well as misinformation. “We are looking at how we share digital content and news stories online,” said Liz Corbin, VP of Communications and Head of News, EBU.
“The ability to continually find ways to help each other, and how to deliver reliable and trustworthy news content to a wider audience, is what inspires us.”
