UN chief hails ‘strong’ new recommendations to curb proliferation of small arms
“The proliferation, diversion and misuse of small arms and light weapons continue to undermine peace, security and sustainable development worldwide. – fuels conflict and armed violence, and causes heavy loss of life,” António Guterres said in a statement issued by his Spokesperson.
The UN chief congratulated member states on its successful completion Fourth summary conferencewelcomes the establishment of an open technical expert group to address evolving issues in the production, technology and design of small arms and light weapons.
Strengthen cooperation
He also acknowledged the commitments countries have made to strengthen international cooperation and support and to implement gender-responsive policies.
Mr. Guterres “strongly believe that the progress made…will help strengthen our common and national efforts to combat illicit small arms and light weapons until the next review conference in 2030,” the statement continued.
The UN chief added that he hoped commitments related to small arms would support discussions at the conference. The Summit of the Future in September”to find forward-looking solutions and act for a more peaceful future.”
Earlier this month, in a statement to delegates, Mr. Guterres noted that the conference was taking place at a “difficult and dangerous time for humanity” with new conflicts putting millions of people at risk, where light weapons play a major role.
Leading cause of violent death
According to United Nations data, small arms are the leading cause of violent death and are the weapon of choice in nearly half of all murders globally.
The proliferation of illegal small arms is increasing due to new advances in small arms manufacturing, technology and design – including 3D printing.
Policy Briefing of the Secretary-General’s New Peace Agenda recognizes the importance of small arms control in conflict prevention and peacebuilding. It makes recommendations to enhance regional, national and global control efforts on both the supply and demand sides.
