UK’s former Myanmar ambassador arrested in country – report | World News

Vicky Bowman, who now runs Myanmar’s Center for Responsible Business (MCRB), and her husband, Htein Lin, a Burmese artist and former political prisoner, were arrested on Wednesday.

The arrest is believed to have taken place in Yangon, formerly known as Rangoon, the largest city in Myanmar, once known as Burma.

It is unclear what charges they have been charged with and a spokesman for the Myanmar military did not return calls seeking comment.

A spokesman for the British Embassy in Myanmar said: “We are concerned about the arrest of a British woman in Myanmar. We are in contact with local authorities and are providing consular assistance.”

The spokesperson did not name the woman involved.

Ms. Bowman was the British ambassador to Myanmar from 2002 to 2006 and has more than three decades of experience in the country.

A profile of her on the website of the Institute for Human Rights and Business says she has been the Director of Myanmar’s Center for Responsible Business (MCRB) since July 2013.
