The Ukrainian Navy said the Vasily Bekh tug with the Tor air defense system on board was used to transport ammunition, weapons and personnel to Zmiinyi Island.

The island of Zmiinyi, located in the northwest of the Black Sea, about 48 km (30 mi) off the coast of Ukraine and 300 km west of Crimea, was annexed by Russia in 2014. It is of considerable strategic importance – only about 16 hectares (40 acres).

The island also became a symbol of Ukrainian resistance after a radio exchange went viral early in the war in which Ukrainian soldiers shrewdly refused to demand head cargo of the Russian warship Moscow.
