Ukrainian army upgraded the passive detection system Kolchuga
The Director General of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine announced on Monday that the Ukrainian military is upgrading an advanced passive detection system called “Kolchuga”.
Details to be released on February 7 media releaseto announce that the upgrade will significantly increase the sensitivity of the passive detection system.
Militarnyi also cited the source as saying that the scientific and production company “Target” was awarded a contract from the Ukrainian army to repair and modernize the Kolchuga system.

Kolchuga is a unique passive electronic detection system manufactured by Ukraine, which makes it possible to detect ground and surface targets and track their movements within a radius of 600 km and targets above not at an altitude of 10 km – up to 800 km, this effectively creates an early warning air defense system.
The Kolchuga station is equipped with airflows with a range of 5 meters, decimeters and centimeters, providing high radio sensitivity in the frequency range 110dB/W – 155 dB/W, depending on frequency.
According to GlobalSecurity.org, the detection range of 800 km is only achieved by the Ukrainian ship Kolchuga. The best that the US AWACS can do is 600 km, while the Vera (Czech Republic) and Vega (Russia) ground complexes can reach 400 km – half the range of the Ukrainian complex. . Kolchuga’s lower limit of the working frequency range is 130MHz and is the lowest of its kind. For AWACS it’s 2,000MHz, for Vera it’s 850MHz, for Vega it’s 200MHz.
