Ukraine may soon receive an advanced medium-range air defense system

According to a CNN report on Monday, the US government appears to be about to send an advanced, medium-range air defense system to Ukraine.

A source familiar with the decision told CNN that Washington plans to announce as soon as this week that it has purchased an advanced medium to long-range surface-to-air missile defense system for Ukraine.

However, there are no details on the exact time the new air defense systems will be delivered.

According to some reports, like a report from The Times of IsraelThe US is purchasing NASAMS, an air defense system developed by Norway, to provide medium to long range defense.

Just last week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said his country needed a more modern air defense system after a series of deadly attacks on the capital Kyiv, as well as the regions of Mykolaiv, Chernihiv and Lviv.

Ukraine operates air and missile defense systems of Soviet origin, some financed by neighboring countries.

The Air Defense System in service is aging, and finding spare parts and expertise to keep it afloat is getting harder and harder as time goes on and tensions mount. Kyiv needs Western-made artillery, drones and anti-aircraft weapons to defend itself against a Russian attack.
