Ukraine announced the mobilization of troops as Russia advanced into the east
Ukraine is planning to commit an additional 160,000 troops to its army as Russia gains influence in the east.
Russia has advanced into the eastern region of Donetsk and said on Tuesday it had fully captured the mining town of Selydove.
It also comes amid reports that some North Korean soldiers have been deployed to Russia.
Ukraine’s military has recently come under heavy pressure, partly because Russia has larger manpower and more abundant resources.
“There are plans to summon more than 160,000 people,” the secretary of Ukraine’s National Security Council, Oleksandr Lytvynenko, told parliament on Tuesday.
The recruitment will take place within three months, AFP news agency reported.
This announcement was made as Ukraine continued to send personnel for the attack on Russia’s Kursk region, which began in August.
The Pentagon estimates that about 10,000 North Korean soldiers have been deployed for training in eastern Russia.
The US said on Tuesday that a “small number” of North Korean troops had been sent to Kursk. It said several thousand more were heading there.
South Korea claims troops are being trained in various locations, many wearing Russian uniforms as camouflage.
A senior government official said they believe up to 11,000 soldiers have been sent to Russia, with at least 3,000 in the west of the country.
Last week, President Vladimir Putin refused to deny that North Korean troops had arrived in Russia, after it was reported that Pyongyang was preparing to send thousands of soldiers to support its ally.
The latest mobilization comes after the Ukrainian Parliament passed a law in April to help mobilize troops to fight Russia’s invading forces.
The law requires every man between the ages of 25 and 60 to log their details into an electronic database in order to be summoned. Army officials are hunting down those who avoid registration, pushing many men who do not want to serve into hiding.
The measure is aimed at boosting numbers in the army, which is under heavy pressure as Russia continues to make gains in the east.
Moscow claims to now control all of Selydove in the Donetsk region as well as surrounding villages, as it is focused on the city of Pokrovsk.
It is a strategically important transport hub, only 18km (10 miles) away.
