UK weather: Met Office issues ice warnings, plummeting temperatures and rain to hit Britain | UK News


A sharp drop in temperatures and icy conditions will sweep parts of Britain overnight after the country suffered a cold snap and downpours of rain in late 2022.

A yellow weather warning for ice is in place for Northern England and across Northern Ireland from midnight Monday to 11am on Tuesday.

The Met Office has also issued a yellow weather warning for ice in Scotland from 6pm New Year’s Day until 11am on Monday, with temperatures expected to drop to -8C. in the Highlands.

The weather agency warned of the risk of injuries from slips and falls, along with patches of ice on some untreated roads, sidewalks and bike paths.

Although rainfall is easing for many, it will remain cold in the north and west of the country, the Meteorological Office added, adding: “Rain in the northeast and southeast will clear in the evening, though extending over the Northern Islands.

“There were showers in some places, but the weather was dry with light winds. Cold in the north and west with a little frost. Frost extended in the north.”

It added that “ice remains the main danger”.

A snow warning across central and northern Scotland has been in place until midday on Sunday.

The Met Office predicts a “much better day than late” on Monday with most areas expecting good, dry and bright weather after a chilly start to the southeast with showers in the morning. morning, although it will still rain in the north-west of Scotland.

Met Office meteorologist Dan Stroud said: “We expect a fairly rapid, widespread drop in temperatures – sub-zero in fact – with some rural spots down to -7C, -8C tonight in the Highlands.”

He added: “The rest of the UK, for sure, was a colder night than last night… a few showers moving in from the north and west around the Liverpool Bay area across the County. Lake, and those showers will leave wet surfaces throughout the afternoon and into the evening.”

After a cold and dry day on Monday, forecasters said the first week of 2023 looked unsettled with mostly wet and windy weather, before turning milder.

Fourteen flood warnings will be issued over the next five days, with localized flooding from rivers and surface water possible on Tuesday and Wednesday for parts of North West England.

Land, roads and some properties can also be flooded and can disrupt travel.

For most of Tuesday and Wednesday, the Bureau of Meteorology predicts unsettled and windy weather in most parts of the country, accompanied by showers or more prolonged rain.

The weather is expected to turn mild after a cold spell that started Tuesday morning, with more rain forecast in mostly central and southern areas late Thursday.
