The specialist care and retraining center in Oxfordshire will provide specialist care and support to the horses as they step out of their first race in August. The appointment marks a milestone. important in establishing racing collective responsibility, and expanding the industry’s safety net, led by the Equestrian Welfare Board and the RoR. Founded and led by Grace Muir, the charity HEROS has attracted over 700 former racehorses since its inception in 2006 and has also built an impressive educational program over the past seven years, supported by the Racing Foundation.

Barry Johnson, President of the Horse Welfare Council, said, “The Good Life Strategy was created to ensure that throughout the life of a Thoroughbred Horse, all aspects of its welfare are considered. thoroughly and improve if possible. This newly agreed definition of motorsport responsibility means we can now expand the sport’s safety net to ensure a smooth transition from racing for anyone. any horse bred for racing. This is about providing a safe space for Thoroughbreds who may need extra assistance through an industry-supported organization with first-class experience and facilities. “

In addition to the appointment of the charity HEROS, the Equine Welfare Board has partnered with the University of Surrey, who are looking to develop and expand the use of a separate welfare assessment software tool – called Animal Welfare Assessment Network (AWAG). Designed for ease of use on phones and laptops, AWAG will officially document Thoroughbred’s health in retirement, assess its suitability for various uses, and mark areas that need development or concern. A pilot study with selected trainers is currently underway with implementation planned in the final quarter of 2022. You can find the full Post-Care Funding Review here. here.
