The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup went to Team Great Britain and Ireland at Ascot on Saturday. They earned 132 points and won five of eight races. Second in the standings is the Women’s Team with 81 points, with the Rest of the World Team at 72 and the European Team with 51.

Jockey Neil Callan, part of the winning team, was awarded the Alistair Haggas Silver Saddle Award after riding the two winners of the day – Orbaan (GB) (God of Invincibility {Ire}) in Dubai Duty Free Full Of Surprise Classified S. and Adaay In Asia (GB) (Adaay {Ire}) in the night, Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Sprint.

Callan said, “There is nothing to dislike about the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, it is brilliant. There are huge prize pools and Ascot makes it a family-friendly event to come and see. It was a great day at our premier track and the fields were competitive.

“This is my third time and I have been on the winning team every year, so I will have to retire now. And it’s nice to have my family here.

“I have ridden with a lot of international jockeys here over the years, all over the world. It’s great to go up against them in a competitive arena.

“The whole concept is great. Look at the coverage there and the people coming to watch – it’s not just the people racing, and betting and playing football and all that, it’s families here with kids. They are the next generation – this is what we need to aim for. “

The Dubai Duty Free Ride Of The Day award went to Joanna Mason for her victory over Amanzoe (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) in the first race of the day, the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Curtain Raiser Classified S.

A representative for Ladies’ Team said, “The whole day was great and the teamwork was good. It was an honor to be chosen to represent the girls and we got our best shot. We thought we were going to have a really good chance today and we came in second, so everyone was proud. We won three races and finished well.

“I also love the team aspect of it, it adds another dimension. For a chance to ride with some famous and famous riders you wouldn’t normally have – Emma-Jayne Wilson, sensationalist in Canada, Kerrin McEvoy, Christophe Lemaire. And to get my first winner at Ascot, on Saturday – I loved it. “
