Uber Eats and Nuro are doing automated food delivery in Texas and California

Many Uber Eats customers will receive their orders from cars without delivery personnel in sight. That’s because Uber has Signed 10-year partnership with Nuro to use its self-driving electric vehicles to deliver food orders in the US. They will start in Houston, Texas and Mountain View, California this fall before eventually extending the service to the greater Bay Area.

Based on TechCrunch, customers won’t have a choice and won’t even know if their order was delivered by the Nuro bot when they make a purchase. It also means that they will be charged the same delivery fee regardless of the delivery method. In addition, they will get a tip refund if they choose to give a tip through the app and a Nuro car shows up instead of a worker. However, they have to walk outside to order on their own, and that can be quite troublesome when it’s raining.

Based on the video the companies have released to show what Nuro delivery looks like, customers will have to enter a code to open the car door and take their order. Nuro introduce Its third-generation delivery vehicle, which comes with an external airbag for pedestrian protection, earlier this year. Since the new model has not been officially launched yet, they will initially use second-generation cars called R2 for the collaboration. The R2 is designed to be completely driverless and is equipped with a 360-degree camera and heatsink, cover and radar for efficient self-direction.

Nuro vehicles have been delivered in Houston since 2019 to other companies such as Walmart. In California, it was first state level The license to deploy autonomous vehicles by 2020, grants the agency the authority to operate a commercial autonomous vehicle service. Like TechCrunch note, that would allow Nuro to receive a fee for each Uber Eats delivery in the state.

Nuro isn’t the only automated delivery company with which Uber Eats has an agreement. Food delivery service has launched a pilot with Motivation in May for orders in Santa Monica, California, although deliveries made by an autonomous vehicle will still have a safe human driver behind the wheel. Uber Eats also launches pilot service with sidewalk delivery company Serving Robotics same month for short-haul deliveries in West Hollywood.
