UAAP: UP fends off UE for share of lead

MANILA, Philippines – The defending champion University of the Philippines beat Oriental University, 84-77, to claim the top spot in the UAAP Season 85 men’s basketball tournament on Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Carl Tamayo led the Fighting Maroons’ balanced attack with 13 points with 5/7 shots, 7 rebounds and 4 steals before injuring his right ankle with 56.5 seconds left.

After losing to Tamayo, the Red Warriors found the opener as CJ Payawal hit a triple hit to shorten the 79-69 lead to a four-point game, 79-75, with 29.8 seconds left. again. Nikko Paranada pu ;; ed UE within three after layup, 80-77, in the last 15.3 seconds.
