MANILA, Philippines — National University moved closer to seventh consecutive title dominating La Salle, 93-61, In Game 1 of the UAAP Season 85 Women’s Basketball Finals Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Mika Cacho led the Lady Bulldogs’ collective effort with 16 points from 5/7 shots from the field along with 4 rebounds and 3 assists.

Rhocel Bartolo also made a big contribution with 12 points, while Angel Surada scored 10 points and 7 goals to avenge them. Second loss 61-57 to La Salle in extra time that ended their 108-game winning streak on November 23.

With 13 of the 16 Lady Bulldogs contributing at least three points, NU coach Aris Dimaunahan praised the response of his wards as they managed to take down the Lady Archers in Game 2 on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena. .

“We talked about it that in a series of short stories it is very important that you get the first one. That’s the mindset for today’s game and I think our girls took the challenge to win today. Their energy and focus, the way they moved the ball today was really amazing,” said Dimaunahan. “This is something we can be happy about but cannot celebrate because the work is not done yet. We have a game to go. We’ll watch the tape and see where we can improve.”

Lady Archers kept it close, leading one, 14-15, at the start of the first quarter. But the defending champions took the lead in the second half as Cacho, Bartolo, Annick Edimo Tiky and Tin Cayabyab led by 14 points after halftime, 46-32.

NU imposed their dominance in the second half and took the lead with 33 points, 90-57, before Ange Surada’s change at 2:05.

Fina Niantcho Tchuido led La Salle with 18 points and 15 rebounds, while Ameng Torres got 14 points and 5 goals but made 5 spins.
