UAAP: Carl Tamayo, UP frustrate La Salle anew in comeback win
MANILA, Philippines – Carl Tamayo calmly buried two game-ending free throws in thrilling seconds as the University of the Philippines opened its title-holding bid with a 72-69 behind-back win over La Salle on Saturday night at the Men’s 85 Basketball UAAP Season.
Tamayo’s free bonus with four ticks remaining for completing the Fighting Maroons climb from a pit is reminiscent of their conquest with the Green Archers in the Final Four Seasons.
Evan Nelle had a narrow chance to turn things around, but the slippery guard fumbled among a host of UP defenders at the top of the arc and couldn’t land a desperate treble.
Nelle previously pulled the Archers in round one with three boards and put Tamayo on the charity strip in the next game.
Tamayo had 18 points and picked up 19 rebounds while Terrence Fortea added 15 points for the defending champions UAAP, who had a double-digit lead by one point in the second half.

Malick Diouf was also instrumental in securing victory for the Maroons, his pairing and successive defensive saves around the perimeter helping the Maroons erase the deficit midway through the fourth inning.
Alex Winston leads the Archers with 27 points while Nelle falls short of his prediction that the Archers are the team to beat this season by contributing 9 points.
