MANILA, Philippines – Carl Tamayo caused a sensation in the third quarter when the University of the Philippines shot down Adamson, 91-70, to cement the lead in the UAAP Season 85 men’s basketball tournament.

Unstoppable around the belt, Tamayo took nine of his 18 points in the crucial third as the defending champion Fighting Maroons cut well.

From a fragile five-point advantage midway through the first half, the Maroons quickly scored 11 straight points without the Falcons finding an answer to take control en route to their fifth straight win, their eighth win. UP in general with a single failure.

“The ball fell into my hand just now. “I give credit to my teammates, they also found me at the right time, in the right place,” Tamayo said.

Malick Diouf scored a career-high 20 with seven of 11 shots on eight rebounds and five steals for the Maroons, who barely survived their first meeting with the Falcons during overtime.

Diouf said: “We worked well as a team and I’m glad we finished well.

Two more wins and the Maroons can secure themselves a trip back to Round 4 of the Finals, where they beat La Salle Green Archers last season before claiming the crown at the expense of the Ateneo Blue Eagles.

Adamson suffered partial casualties while chasing the Maroons with Vince Magbuhos injuring his right knee and Jerom Lastimosa spraining his right ankle after accidentally landing on JD Cagulangan’s leg after an upside down move.

“It was not the start we wanted. They scored 45 points in the first half. UP coach Goldwyn Monteverde said.

Lastimosa finished with 19 points before he was brought to the bench while Cedrick Manzano added 10 points for the Falcons, who had only seven spins but failed to deflect UP’s fire, including 40 points from players from the bench.
