Via Charles Brun: Unexpectedly, Frank Warren made the winning bid of 41 million dollars for a wallet bid on Friday for a fight between Tyson Fury and Dillian Whyte. Warren’s bid greatly surpassed Matchroom boxing promoter Eddie Hearn’s bid of $32 million.
If Hearn wins the bid, he plans to book a fight between Fury and Whyte at the end of April.
With an 80/20 split, the nurses guaranteeing the Fury-Whyte fight will be as follows:
- Fury – $32.8 million
- Whyte – $8.2 million
That’s good money for 34-year-old Whyte (28-2, 19 KOs), who was just two games before that was cooled in the fifth round by 40-year-old fossil Alexander Povetkin.
Fury vs. Whyte will play big in the UK, but in the US this will be like a Sefer Seferi or Tom Schwarz fighting style. American boxing fans aren’t familiar with Whyte, and those who know him view him as someone who was knocked down by an ancient
According to Mike Coppinger, the Fury vs Whyte match venue is targeted for April at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales.
Whyte wins his WBC mandatory spot with ease, beating Oscar Rivas in the title elimination instead of one of the talented heavyweights like Frank Sanchez, Filip Hrgovic, Tony Yoka, Joe Joyce and Daniel Dubois.
If Whyte has to face one of the WBC title contenders, it’s fair to say he’s not a compulsion. He’s too flawed, too chinky, and too basic.
The purse will be much bigger for Whyte if his promoter Eddie Hearn has hit his mark with a 55/45 split claim with the World Boxing Council.
If WBC were to be awarded to Hearn his way with a 55/45 split, it is certain that Fury would have vacated their title. Whyte will then have to battle the next highest ranked candidate in their standings.
Currently, Deontay Wilder is ranked first. It will be interesting to see Whyte stand up to Wilder’s right arm prowess.
Hearn went to great lengths to get a bigger share for Whyte, but Fury’s promoter asked the WBC for an 80/20 split based on the money for their recent bouts.
Fury earned $20 million for his fight against former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder last October compared with $300,000 Whyte earned against Povetkin in March 2021.
This is a risky fight for Fury against big puncher Whyte. If Whyte wins this bout, Fury can forget about battling IBF/WBA/WBO champion Oleksandr Usyk for an undisputed championship and Anthony Joshua.
According to Hearn, Fury was the reason that led to the execution of the deal aside. He said that Fury had insisted on going into a tune-up fight in March before fighting Usyk.
There is no time for Fury to be allowed to fight an unnecessary fight in the first half of 2022. It is not clear why Fury feels he needs to adjust to getting ready for a fight with Usyk.
It’s likely due to all the weight that 33-year-old Fury put on while celebrating his win over Deontay Wilder last October. Fury may have let himself go the way Andy Ruiz Jr did after his upset win over Joshua in June 2019.
For Fury to have any blows to beat a talent like Usyk, he’ll need to time down to the weights he applied to his fight with Wladimir Klitschko in 2015. Fury weighs 247 lbs. for that match.
Fury weighed 277 lbs for his fight with Wilder last October and 273 lbs for his rematch in February 2020.
The 270s will never work against Fury against Usyk, as he goes too fast and can make him look bad.
Therefore, Fury wants to adjust to have more time to lose weight before confronting Usyk.
