A fight between Fury and Usyk is tipped to take place in the first half of 2023, after talks with Anthony Joshua over a major UK bout in December broke down last week.
Many observers have suggested that the WBC world champion could try to turn around an undisputed clash with WBO, IBF and WBA belt holder Usyk, based on the troubles Fury has had earlier in the game. His career with swimming is elusive. However, arguments from both sides suggest negotiations are positive for a fight next year.
Fury appeared this afternoon to say that he will be announcing a competitor for the December 3 date next week, with German heavyweight Mahmoud Charr supposedly taking part.
Though Charr will represent an inferior dancing partner after initial talk with the Joshua team that emerged from the outside was promising. Fans might be forgiven, though, if the fight is seen as a prelude to an inheritance-defining battle with Usyk.
Fury and Usyk’s meeting will be the first fight for the undisputed heavyweight crown since Lennox Lewis defeated Evander Holyfield in 1999.
As recent events have shown, it’s probably wise to always avoid putting your hopes up as a boxing fan.
