Tyrese Speaks Out After Arrest for Failure to Pay Child Support
Phew! Tyrese Gibson started his week by spending a few hours in jail. On Monday (September 9), the singer attended a hearing in Fulton County regarding his ongoing child support dispute with his ex-wife, Samantha Lee. Finally, the presiding judge arrested him for failing to make court-ordered monthly payments of $10,000 to Soraya, his and Lee’s five-year-old daughter.
What’s the latest news on Tyrese Gibson?
According to TMZTyrese is no longer in custody as of Monday evening. His attorney, Tanya Mitchell, is reportedly appealing the judge’s child support order. In April 2023, Judge Kevin Farmer ordered Gibson to pay Samantha $10,000 a month. He is said to have refused, leaving him with a $73,000 bill, including $7,500 for Lee’s attorney fees.
That’s why Judge Farmer decided to hold him in contempt of court. He was required to make the overdue payments before he was released. However, his attorney, Mitchell, appealed the child support order, which delayed the payments. The appeal does not mean Tyrese will not have to make future payments, and it’s unclear whether he paid any of them on Monday before his release. TMZ reported that Gibson and his attorney have used this appeal method before to avoid court-ordered payments.
Early Tuesday morning (September 10), Tyrese took to Instagram Stories to share about his arrest.
“Being arrested is not fun, in fact it is traumatic. People will ask why does this judge Kevin M Farmer HATE me so much? Attached are the nightmarish details of his APPEAL,” he wrote in a video about his recent appearance on ‘The Breakfast Club.’
Gibson shared the same message a second time, but named his ex-wife’s lawyer, Adam Glickman, as another person who hates him “just as much.” In both posts, he linked Edited appeal papersIt is currently unclear when Tyrese will appear in court again or how long the court-ordered payments will be suspended.
Here’s what Samantha Lee shared recently
Meanwhile, Samantha Gibson’s last post was on Saturday, two days before Tyrese’s arrest, and showed a boomerang image of her smiling accompanied by the J. Cole song ‘Crooked Smile.’ Her caption read, “Keep smiling,” and while her comments section was “limited,” a few Tyrese-related comments slipped through.
The user, @sabrina_musiclover, wrote, “I hope you consider the mental and financial well-being of your daughter’s father and don’t make the process ugly. If he is taking care of his child, let him be there and be in her life, he has so much going on, too much to lose, a tour, movies, new album, I think you understand that the better he is, the better your child will be cared for. I pray you both will be civil and do what is best for your child.”
However, Lee has yet to publicly respond to @sabrina_musiclover’s comments, similar comments, or her ex-husband’s temporary arrest.
Tyrese Gibson’s arrest comes less than two weeks after his new film ‘1992’ premiered in theaters. He also recently spoke to Thembi about ‘Stepping Into The Shade Room’, where he expressed that losing his wife Lee and not being able to live under the same roof with his daughter was not a victory for him. He also spoke about Lee’s request for $20,000 a month and why he didn’t think a child needed that kind of money to care for while living in Atlanta.
“No, no, no, I’m not at the top because I’m not married anymore and I don’t live under the same roof with my kids and I want to be married and do that for the rest of my life. I’m a failure,” he said.
