Two-tier world champion Eder Jofre passes!


Via Ken Hissner: The International Boxing Hall of Fame announced that its flag will be flown at a height of half a foot in memory of bantamweight and featherweight world champion Eder Jofre, who passed away on October 2 at the age of 86.

“Eder Jofre has combined classic boxing skills with the strength to become a world champion in two weight classes and an icon in his native Brazil,” Hall of Fame CEO , said Edward Brophy.

“The Hall of Fame sends our condolences to Jofre’s family and joins the boxing community to mourn his passing,” said Hall of Fame CEO Edward Brophy.

Born in San Paulo, Brazil, in 1936, Jofre turned professional in 1957 after competing in the 1956 Olympics losing in the quarterfinals after winning.

In February 1960, he defeated Ernesto Miranda, 40-3-4, with whom he drew twice to win the South American title. Four months later, he knocked out Miranda in four rounds.

Jofre captured the NBA title in August 1960, knocking out Jose Medel 46-13-3. In November, he won the vacant NBA world title by defeating Eloy Sanchez, 25-12, in Los Angeles, California.

In September 1962, in a rematch, he defeated Medel, 52-17-4, in Sao Paulo, Brazil, to win the world bantamweight title.

In April 1963, Jofre earned another WBC title by knocking out Katsutoshi Aoki, 33-1-1, in Japan. After defending his bantamweight title seven times, he lost the crown to Fighting Harada, 38-3, by splitting in Japan in 1965 with a 47-0-3 record and retiring in 1966. lost in the rematch against Harada, then 42-3, in Japan.

Jofre returned three years later and, after fifteen wins, took the WBC featherweight belt from Jose Legra of Cuba, 128-9-4, out of Spain by majority decision in Brazil.

After winning two non-title matches in October, he defeated former WBA and WBC featherweight champion Vicente Saldivar of Mexico 37-2. Jofre won seven non-retirement games in October, defeating Octavio Gomez, 55-14-7, in San Paulo, Brazil.

“Golden Bantam” retired in 1976 with a professional record of 72-2-4 with 50 kills.

In 1992, Jofre was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
