Two men have been arrested after a man was stabbed to death outside a mosque in Coventry.

West Midlands Police were called to Jamiah Masjid & Institute just after 9pm on Sunday following reports of a fight involving a large group of men, some armed with knives.

Officers found two injured men, including a 52-year-old man who died a short time later.

The second man, 44, suffered a minor stab wound.

A 56-year-old man was arrested a short time later by nearby armed officers, while a 27-year-old second suspect was arrested in the early hours of this morning.

Both men are being questioned on suspicion of murder.

Detective Chief Superintendent Shaun Edwards, overseeing the investigation, said: “We are supporting the family of the man who died at a truly terrible time for them, and our thoughts are with them. .

“We’ve made some really good initial progress on this investigation, but there’s still a lot of work to be done to identify everyone involved in what happened last night.

“We do not believe this has anything to do with any other incident or dispute in Coventry or the wider West Midlands, and it appears to be a single dispute that ended in tragedy.”

He said patrols in the area were being stepped up and asked anyone who may have seen what happened on a cell phone or dash cam to contact police.
