Two British brothers, aged seven and nine, drown in German lake | UK News
Two British boys have died while swimming in a lake in Germany, authorities have confirmed.
Two brothers, aged seven and nine, were reported missing by their parents at a designated swimming area on Lake Eiserbach in the south of Aachen.
According to German newspaper Bild, emergency services were called around 6pm on Thursday.
They were joined by the Technical Relief Service (THW) and members of the German Rescue Association (DLRG).
Rescuers pulled the children out of the water and they were taken to hospitals in Aachen and Cologne, where they later died.
Aachen prosecutors said they were investigating whether the deaths were caused by negligence.
A spokesperson told RP Online: “We’re not focused on anyone in particular, we’re just doing our job.”
She added that the results of the investigation will not come before the middle of next week.
The mayor of Simmerath, Bernd Goffart told the German Press Agency: “It was really dramatic.
“Today I know some of the helpers are sick. You can’t get those images out of your head.
“Many people spontaneously helped find and then give first aid to the children. Thank you both to the emergency services.”
