Twitter turns off CoTweets for co-authored Tweets after months of testing

Twitter has again turned off a feature even before the stable rollout. Twitter’s collaborative tweeting feature ‘CoTweets’, which was launched for testing last year, has been discontinued. The microblogging site began testing the feature in July 2022 for select users across the US, South Korea, and Canada. However, this feature is now disabled even before the stable rollout. CoTweets will allow two different Twitter users to tweet together. Twitter has undergone a number of changes, introducing and removing new and old features, since Elon Musk acquired the social networking platform in October 2022.

According to the announcement made on Twitter help pagetest of by Twitter CoTweets ended effective January 31. Twitter says the CoTweets feature will no longer be available and existing CoTweets will be viewable for another month, after which they will be reverted to Retweets. Once deployed, all existing CoTweets will appear as Retweets on the co-author’s profile and on the timelines of their followers.

Twitter roll out Testing CoTweets last July, allowing two accounts to co-author a tweet. This feature has been tested for select accounts in the US, Canada, and South Korea. However, the company has said that it can turn the feature off at the end of the test, and any CoTweets that have been created can be deleted.

The CoTweets feature allows eligible Twitter users to send an invitation to co-author a tweet with another user. Co-authored tweets used to have profile pictures and handles of both co-authors. “CoTweet is a co-authored Tweet that is posted simultaneously to the profiles of both the author and the timelines of their followers,” the company’s FAQ page explains.

Meanwhile, a latest update to Twitter has report removed the DM icon from the user’s profile page for some Twitter users on Android and iOS. The option to send a direct message has disappeared for many users on both platforms. The “DM” icon used to appear between the Follow and Announce buttons on the profile page. Some Twitter users have report problem on microblogging site. However, users can still send direct messages by going to the Messages tab and searching for the account they want to send a direct message to. It’s still unclear if the missing DM button is due to a bug or Twitter officially removed the icon in a recent update.
