Twitter launches update that lets you pay for verification badge | Science & Tech News

Twitter has begun rolling out an improved subscription service that allows anyone to pay to receive a verification badge.

An update to the platform’s iOS app, rolled out on Saturday, reveals the new look Twitter Blue is live now, with a checkmark on your account listed among the perks of paying $7.99 a month.

“Power over people: Your account will have a blue check mark, just like the celebrities, companies, and politicians you’ve followed,” it said.

It is available in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, where Twitter Blue is already available.

While the update says the feature has also launched in the UK, it doesn’t appear to be working yet.

Other features promised “coming soon” include half the number of ads, the ability to post longer videos, and priority ranking for content posted on the platform.

The previous blue tick verification system was designed to help users identify authentic, influential users on the platform such as government figures, athletes and women, journalists and brands. brand.

Musk defends verification change

New owner Elon Musk appears to be looking to diversify the company’s revenue streams following his $44 billion takeover.

“There are too many “verified” legacy checkmarks given, often arbitrary, so they are *not* verified in reality. You can buy as many as you want right now by search on Google,” he tweeted on Saturday.

“Integrating the payment system with Apple/Android is a much better way to ensure verification.

“As soon as we confirm that it works well in the initial set of countries and we have completed the translation work, it will roll out worldwide.”

Twitter’s early-stage product executive, Esther Crawford, sought to clarify that despite the app update, the new Twitter Blue isn’t fully out yet.

“The new Blue isn’t out yet – our launch sprint continues but some people may see us updated as we’re testing and pushing the changes in real time” , she said in a tweet.

It appeared just a day after the social network started laying off thousands of its employees.

Employees facing job loss in the UK have three days to nominate a representative for their formal employment consultation.

UK workers have been told that the company plans to notify and consult with worker representatives about redundancy, as required by employment law.
