Twins land All-Star closer than Jorge Lopez in trade with Orioles

The Minnesota twins will push for a playoff with Jorge López closer after buying the 2022 All-Star from the Baltimore Orioles for a promising package, by Jon Heyman of the New York Post and ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

López, 29, has an ERA of 1.68 this season in 44 appearances and has scored 19 saves in 23 chances. Before the 2022 season, López was a starter for the Orioles, but scored a 3-14 record in 2021 with a 6.07 ERA before he move to the barn in August of last year.

“I just think he needs to try something different, a little bit,” Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said at the time, via MLB.com. “We didn’t close the door for him to come back, but I wanted to see what it looked like when he came out of the barn. …This might take some of the pressure off him.”

The move paid off, and Baltimore is tipped to get prospects touting Cade Povich and Yennier Canó, as well as other prospects in the deal.

Minnesota is one game ahead of the Cleveland Guardians in AL Central and most of them rely on Emilio Pagán when closer. The 31-year-old general has 9 saves this season in 15 chances.

Orioles is 52-51 this season after recovering from early 14-24. However, the team still finished fourth in the AL East and 2.5 back in the AL Wild Card race. In Monday, Baltimore trade Trey Mancini to the Houston Astros.
