Tumblr will review its censorship algorithms after the deal involves a porn ban

reached an agreement with the New York City Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) on how the social media platform handles effective in 2018. CCHR officials, which began investigating shortly after Tumblr announced the ban, claimed that the move disproportionately affected LGBTQ+ users.

Under the settlement, first reported by , Tumblr will invite an expert to review its moderation algorithms for potential bias. It will take its moderators through a diversity and inclusion training program, revising the appeals process. Tumblr will also re-evaluate about 3,000 older cases that have been successfully appealed against by users to look for signs of bias.

Tumblr says that, for the owner of WordPress Automattic purchased the service in 2019 from Verizon, it replaced the algorithm used to classify adult content. Under the agreement with the CCHR, which does not issue formal legal claims, the new system can “more accurately classify images and data.” The appeal process for images that allegedly violate Tumblr’s adult content ban has also been improved. Evaluators now review appeals and make final calls.

Automattic’s acquisition of Tumblr may have led to the deal being signed. The Verge note that, under its current ownership, Tumblr attempted to make amends with LGBTQ+ users who left the platform following the ban. Even before Tumblr banned porn, the platform after its Safe Mode filtered out dubious LGBTQ+ posts.
