Miami Dolphins midfielder Tua Tagovailoa was carried out on a stretcher Thursday night against the Cincinnati Bengals, and it is suspected he may have suffered a concussion.

“It was a scary moment,” Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said. “He is assessed as having a concussion and is being treated for a concussion. He is at the hospital. I believe he is about to be discharged.”

Earlier this week League said it would investigate the Dolphins into its concussion assessment process after Tagovailoa returned to the game after a heavy first-half hit in the team’s September 25 game against the Buffalo Bills.

The Dolphins initially assumed a head injury, but McDaniel called back and said Tagovailoa had a back injury, and again confirmed Thursday night.

So, how should teams assess head injuries?

How the NFL defines concussion

The National Football League defines sports-related concussion as “injury to the brain caused by biomechanical forces.”

Concussions can be caused by direct blows to the head, face, neck, or anywhere else on the body that transmits force to the head, speaking tournament.

Observable signs of a concussion include any loss of consciousness, convulsions, slow movements, difficulty with coordination or balance, blank vision, head grip, confusion, insanity remember or can see the wound on the face.

Pre-season concussion protocols

All players and team staff must receive and review concussion education materials at the start of the season and then develop an emergency medical action plan.

Once a year, players must be evaluated and have a baseline neurological exam before the season begins. Tests may include a computer-based test or a pencil and paper test, or a combination of both and are administered every three years. More tests can be conducted if the player is subject to concussion.

Game day protocols

On match day, unaffiliated neurologic trauma consultants (UNCs) and athletic coaches stand on the sidelines and in a stadium booth to survey the game for signs of concussion. which not.

If UNCs or athletic coaches, also known as stall supervisors, see any signs of concussion, they must contact the team doctor to recommend a sideline test. The UNC for the opposing team can also make recommendations.

The player is first taken to the sidelines for examination, and if any signs of concussion are identified, the player is taken to the locker room for further evaluation and not allowed to return to the game.

If a player is returned to the game before the medical staff has completed the assessment, the stall supervisor may time out the medical until the assessment is complete.

Once a player is diagnosed with a concussion, he is not allowed to meet or speak to the press or drive a vehicle on the day of the injury.

Viewers indignant at Dolphins .’s reaction

Many match watchers were extremely critical of the Dolphins’ treatment of Tagovailoa over the past week, saying he should not have been allowed to play Thursday in the first place.

“The bottom line regarding Tassel is that LIFE is bigger than football,” said former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III. “Teams must always put people before players. Health before competitive advantage. Getting Tua out there isn’t just a matter of player safety. It’s a matter of quality of life.”

NFL Hall of Famer and Fox Sports commentator Shannon Sharpe said in a tweet he believes the Dolphins were wrong about Tagovailoa’s back injury rather than a head injury last week.

“It’s a serious injury,” he said in another. “Tua shouldn’t be there with the Thursday-Sunday spin. Sometimes players need to defend themselves. Dolphins lost against Tua.”
