HYDERABAD: A wedding held on the outskirts of the city was canceled by the bride at the last minute, ostensibly because of a low dowry. She demanded more than Rs 2 lakh, which was paid by the groom’s family according to the tribal custom of “reverse dowry” to be paid to future brides.
The wedding was scheduled for Thursday at Ghatkesar and the bride, who will be traveling from her home village of Aswaraopet in Bhadradri Kothagudem, refused to fulfill the marriage vows. The wedding hall was lavishly decorated and the invitees waiting for the ‘muhurat’ were amazed at the bride’s decision.
Not seeing the bride arrive at the wedding venue, the groom’s family rushed to the hotel her family booked to find an explanation. The groom’s family was shocked to learn that the bride demanded more dowry.
The groom leaves the wedding ‘mandap’ and the family rushes to the police. The bride’s family was summoned and the matter discussed. “The two families arranged themselves and the wedding was canceled. No complaints or reservations. It turned out that the bride was not interested in the marriage, so she asked for more dowry and did not appear. at the ‘mandap’,” a police officer told TOI.
Police said the bride’s family received Rs 20,000 as a dowry from the groom, but because the bride was adamant with her decision, the money was returned and both families went their separate ways.
