Trial by Fire, a limited series based on the 1997 Uphaar Cinema fire in Delhi that claimed the lives of 59 people, is Netflix’s next original Indian series. It will start streaming from January 13, 2023.
Inspired by the bestselling book Trial by Fire: The Tragic Tale of the Uphaar Fire Tragedy by Neelam and Shekhar Krishnamoorthy, coming Netflix the show was directed by Prashant Nair, who also served as a host.
Rajshri Deshpande and Abhay Deol plays Neelam and Shekhar, a real-life couple who lost two children in tragedy and fight a long legal battle for justice.
In a statement released Wednesday, Nair said the Krishnamoorthys family are inspirational examples of the resilience and fortitude it takes to give even a little bit of direction in this country.
“What happened to them and how they were forced to fight for justice is truly horrific and unfortunately, today there are countless others who are in similar situations. We are grateful to Netflix for its help. are brave partners in telling this story,” added the director.
The fateful evening of June 13, 1997 saw 59 people killed and another 100 spectators injured when a fire engulfed the Uphaar cinema in South Delhi.
Trial By Fire will depict their endless trials and tribulations in their pursuit of justice for more than 24 years while also looking at other lives touched and destroyed by the fire.
Produced by Endemol Shine India and House of Talkies, the Netflix show also stars Rajesh Tailang, Ashish Vidyarthi, Anupam Kher, Ratna Pathak, Shilpa Shukla and Shardul Bharadwaj.
All episodes of Trial by Fire will premiere January 13, 2023 on Netflix worldwide.
