Travis Pastrana’s Family Huckster 1983 Subaru Built to Tear Gymkhana

Travis Pastrana showed off his 1983 Subaru GL “Family Huckster” earlier this year, but kept the specs private. We now have a little more detail on this insane build, which will appear at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed and in a Gymkhana video later this year.

Designed with help from Subaru Motorsports USA, the wagon will borrow some aerodynamic tricks from Subaru WRX STI AirslayerSTI Pastrana once drove to Gymkhana 2020, according to a press release from producer Gymkhana Hoonigan. After inviting series creator Ken Block for that video, Pastrana also set a record at the 2021 Washington Hill Climb in the Airslayer.

Like the Airslayer, the Family Huckster has an active rear wing, as well as movable aerodynamic wings at the front and rear. It also has a carbon fiber roof rack designed to direct air to the rear-mounted radiator via a NACA duct on the roof. Given the GL’s boxy shape, those devices are definitely needed.

Pastrana said in a statement: “The ’83 wagon flies as fast as you can imagine… like a brick. “This makes the jumps more sketchy but also more fun and less predictable. The Family Huckster is definitely my all-time favorite car to drive.”

Although designed to look like a 1983 Subaru GL, the Family Huckster features a custom tubular chassis with a carbon fiber bodywork. It rolls on KMC wheels once inspired by the 8-spoke wheels that denote the full-time all-wheel drive Subarus had in the 1980s (some Subaru models still use front-wheel drive).

As in the Airslayer, power is provided by an 862-horsepower boxer-4 engine, mated to a 6-speed sequential transmission and all-wheel drive. Wagons will incorporate some changes to the differences announced by Pastrana’s Record Mt. Washington runaccording to Hoonigan.

The interior aims to recreate the look of an antique GL wagon. It features a reproduction of the original scanned panel, made in blue carbon fiber to match the colors of the original. The dashboard also includes an original 1983 GL radio and a 12-inch digital instrument cluster with the display programmed to look like a 1980s Subaru digital instrument cluster.

The Family Huckster will appear at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed, scheduled for June 23-26, and will debut in Gymkhana after that. However, Hoonigan has yet to discuss a release date for the next video.
